We Share 5 Little Known Burrito Facts + The Top 5 Deals this National Burrito Day: April 4, 2019

Last fall social media exploded when pictures of Justin Bieber eating a burrito sideways surfaced, went viral, and had news outlets worldwide sharing the images. Turns out this was an elaborate hoax that was geniously executed by the YouTube Channel Yes Theory, which was more than 3.5 million subscribers.

As big as Justin Bieber news is at any time, it was the outrageous nature of eating a burrito sideways (as seen in the photo above) that propelled this prank to all-time status. The absurdity of it all is still hilarious to this day!

In honor of #NationalBurritoDay, we’re sharing our Burrito Top 10, with where you can find the 5 Best Deals plus 5 little know burrito facts.

#9. “Little Donkey”

FACT: While the exact origins of “the burrito” are only speculation, we do know the name means “small burro”, or “little donkey.” Wikipedia’s burrito entry has a few notes about how the name came about, but what makes most sense is that early Mexican explorers used to wrap up a bunch of items and carry them on the burros. So if you were to wrap up your lunch items into a tortilla for on-the-go eats, it became a smaller symbol of the donkey’s strapped-up haul.

#8. BOGO Burritos at El Pollo Loco

DEAL: El Pollo Loco is offering a free burrito when you buy a regularly priced burrito or a purchase of equal or greater value.

#7. Mission-style Burritos, a San Francisco Treat

FACT: Today’s modern, overstuffed burrito traces its roots back to 1950s Mission District in San Francisco, when corner grocer El Faro (“The Lighthouse”) claims to have began offering this super-sized style of burrito.
